Contractors returns back to abandoned sites following the order made by the President on forensic Audit in the Niger delta development commission NDDC to ascertain and verify contracts carried out since 2001 to 2019
The president, Muhammad Buhari had on October, 2019 ordered for a forensic Audit in the operations of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC,
during a courstsey visit by the governors of the states that make up the Commission, led by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State when the President had felt dissatisfied on what is presently on the ground in the South south region over the huge resources that have been made available to the organisation.
“The projects said to have been done must be verifiable. You just cannot say you spent so much billions and when the place is visited, one cannot see the structures that have been done. The consultants must also prove that they are competent, “the President said.
You could also recall that the minister of Niger delta affairs, Godswill Akpabio had earlier ordered the suspension of payments of money to contractors.
On the 22nd of October, 2019 the Public Accounts Committee of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria headed by Senator Matthew Urhoghide(Edo North). In the spirit of transparency and in her bid to sustain the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, that forensic auditing of the Commission be conducted came to the commissions head quarters in port Harcourt has they began inquiries into how the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, awarded Water Hyacinth contracts and Desilting jobs from 2001 to 2019 to know whether due processes in respect to the Procurement Act 2007 were followed; who the contractors were; locations of the contracts; whether completed and/or ongoing; how much had been paid and/or owed; names and addresses of contractors; banking transactions relating to the jobs.
It was gathered by Area talk report during an interview with one of the site worker when the team visited one of the abandoned sites by the contractor who confirmed and explained that the said contract has been awarded since March this year but the contractor only came and brought some equipments and removed it after some days not until last week when they now saw the equipments and other materials again been brought back.
Indications have shown that following the recent trend in the agency and fear of been imprisoned by the President, many contractors have been remobilized to thr abandoned sites across the region.
