The author of a book, Too Good to Die, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has been ordered by a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt on Monday to pay an ex-governor of the state, Peter Odili, N250m as damages for defamation.
This development has occurred as a result of a defamation suit that Odili filed before the court in October 2018, demanding an apology and N1bn as damages from Odinkalu, stressing that the said book had caused him public ridicule.
The defendant has been ordered by Justice Augustina Kingsley-Chuku to pay Odili N250m and an additional N300,000 as cost and restrained the author from further publication and circulation of the book.
Speaking further on the issue, the judge also ordered Odinkalu to apologise to Odili in two national dailies.
On the the contents of the book Justice Chuku stated that it is distasteful and malicious, stressing that the defendant abandoned the case and failed to provide further evidence.
